EFFECT OF LITHIUM CARBONATE ON BRAIN OF RABBITS A HISTOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY

Abstract
It was well known that the Lithium intoxication as a complication of the use of Lithium Carbonate as a drug regiment for mental science field, but the cerebral morphology concerning to it¢¥s intoxication was yet unknown.
A study on experimental encephalopathy in rabbits induced by repeated administration of Lithium Carbonate was made as an attempt to produce toxic inflammatory losions of brain as morphological view point, concerning to a certain neurologic disorders. The results and conclusions obtained were follows:
1) In the animal groups in which were administered Lithium Carbonate 10mg, %mg or 50mg/kg/ day repeatedly, per oral route, the histopathologic changes were non-spocific, such as reactive, reversible nouronal changes and mild to moderate circulatory disturbances, observed in all cases.
2) In the animal group in which was administered Lithium Carbonate 10mg/kg/day plus Chlorpromazine 10mg/kg/day combination, repeatedly, per oral route, the. histopathologic changes were similar as above groups, in all cases.
3) The encephalitic findings were distinct in the group in which was administered Lithium Carbonate 100mg/kg/day. repeatedly, per oral route.
The histopathologic changes were considerably severe and irreversible neuronal changes, such as chromatolysis, neurenophagy and focal gliosis, as well as perivascular round cell cuffings, patchy hemorrhages and focal demyelinization.
4) As results, Lithium induced-encephalophathy in rabbits could be achieved by means of producing cytotoxic cerebral condition through the repeated administration of Lithium carbonate l0pmg or more /kg/day per oral route, which could be attributed to fatal don lit tb4 animal group,
